I just read a new post from John Jantsch at Duct Tape Marketing.  In John’s post, Marketing is the New Selling, John discusses the idea that we are no longer just selling our products but we are selling ourselves.  We do this as experts by teaching, publishing and sharing information with our customers.  In my opinion this “marketing” approach is really about creating an environment that shows are customers we care about them and their success and not just the sell.  This is key to relationship building and creating a loyal customer base.

I recently went to a Broadway show called Chinglish.  This show was about an American going to China to do business for the first time.  The show focused on the Chinese relationship model called Guanxi.  The idea of Marketing and Relationship Building being the “new” sales model reminded me of this.  In many ways the Chinese have it right.  In trying to best define Guanxi for you I found a blog by Morgan Malloy, a Harvard graduate reflecting on her time in China.

She states, “But college missed one giant truth: it’s much less about your skills and much more about your network. We like to pretend it’s about skill and talent. And granted, your skill, experience, and talent do matter, and will affect your career. But ultimately, it’s of minor importance compared to who you know and how you leverage those relationships.

In China, everyone–and I mean everyone–fully understands this concept. It’s called guanxi (关 系), and it vaguely translates to “relationship.” It actually means much more than relationship. It means the power and utility you gain through your relationships. It also means to care–implying a deep kind of relationship, not the acquaintances we label part of our network in the states. And in business in China, your guanxi matters a whole lot more than, well, just about anything else.”

What do I think is the right combination?  A little bit of guanxi (who you know) and a lot of caring for your clients, becoming an expert so that you can make sure you are a partner in their success.

So sorry I am have been off-line for a few weeks, working hard and preparing to teach a group class this Thursday (There is still space to join if you are in the NY area).  To make up for my absence I am going to share some blogs over the next few days that I found and believe will add value to any entrepreneur.  Today’s article brings us back to basics.  For those of you using a personal Facebook page for your business, keep reading.

Facebook is a great tool for promoting your business and connecting with customers, but unfortunately it often makes the headlines for all the wrong reasons.

Whether it’s concerns over our privacy or stories of creepy stalkers trawling Facebook for easy prey, one thing is clear: you need to very careful about who you share your personal information with online.

But what happens when you’re networking on Facebook for business?

You’ll often interact with customers, prospects and other connections who you’ve never met before, so it’s important that you keep those lines of communication open – and the door to your personal life closed.

Using Facebook Profiles and Pages

Facebook is set up in a way that enables you to keep your personal and professional lives separate. A profile is for personal use and allows you to control your own privacy settings (you “friend” a profile), and a page is for business use and is open to the public (you “like” a page).

If you have a Facebook profile set up under your business name, change it to a Facebook page!

Not only is it against Facebook’s terms and conditions to set up a personal profile under a business name (a profile must be in the name of an individual – if not, it could be shut down), but a profile is limited to 5000 friends – once you reach that number, that’s it. No more friends for your business. However, “Likes” on your business page are unlimited.

So to keep things simple, use your Facebook profile for interacting with friends and family who you know in “real life”, and set up a Facebook page for your business.

Of course, this doesn’t mean that you can’t still promote your business on your personal profile by posting updates and sharing content, but your personal profile must represent you as an individual.

Bridging the Gap

There is one area of your Facebook profile that you absolutely MUST update with your business details so that people can easily find your Facebook page when they interact with you – and that’s your Work section.

Here you can link directly to your Facebook business page. This link is included in the basic public information that anyone can view when they click on your profile, so it allows any visitor to your profile to click through to your business page and learn more about what you have to offer.

Including this link on your profile also makes it easy for other Facebook page owners you’re networking with to “like” you back – they can simply view their list of page “likes”, click on your profile, and then click on the link to your Facebook page to check out your business and “like” you back if they wish.

The Reveal Tab – two stage landing page

What exactly is a two-stage landing page? By using a bit of code it is possible to hide some of the content from non-fans, or those people who haven’t yet clicked the “Like” button. Once the “Like” button is clicked, the second page is revealed and can reveal additional information, such as a form or link to your actual website, a coupon for your services, or a free gift. Perhaps you have a free e-book you want to give people who “Like” you to show your appreciation. Rather than showing them the registration form on the first landing page, you hide it from view until the “Like” button has been clicked.

2011 was a year some of us would like to forget and a year some of us loved.  Either way it is time for a fresh start and a new look.  It is time reorganize and upgrade our businesses, websites, and appearance.  It is lots of fun to throw out what hasn’t worked in the past and try something modern and new.  Why not have an up-to-date photo to go with the new 2012 you!!!

As a photographer I love to work with people by hearing what inspires them in their business and translating that into a great image for their branding materials. With years of experience working with Fashion, Advertising and small business owners, I’ve developed a keen sense of what matters in an image to attract the customers and clients you want.

On the day of the shoot, you’ll arrive at the time you scheduled and work one on one with with my stylist to go through the clothing options you brought.  I am asking that you come camera ready as far as hair and makeup are concerned.  If you need advice on getting this done let me know and I will assist you in finding a great person to do it.  If enough people ask I may have someone come in for an additional charge.  You will then have a roughly 10-15 minute photo session for each of the portraits you decide to purchase.

Once your camera ready, our producer will bring you to the set and we’ll shoot the photos. You can expect to be with us for around an hour.

A few days after the shoot I will send you a link so you can view your images. I will have them edited down to roughly 20 of the best shots and you will be able to choose the one you really love. Once you give me your final choice your shot can be retouched and on your site within two weeks.
